Murfreesboro Recipes 4th of july party

Happy 238th Birthday, America!
We wanted to share one of our favorite Independence Day Recipes - straight from Grandma's Kitchen:

Red, White & Blue Trifle

1/4 cup plus 2/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon of almond extract
1 store bought or homemade angel food cake - cut into 1 inch pieces
1 pound of cream cheese brought to room temperature
2 cups of heavy cream brought to room temperature
2 pints of blueberries
2 pints of strawberries - hulled and sliced

Heat 1/4 cup sugar, the lemon juice and 1/4 cup water in a saucepan over medium to medium-high heat.   Stir until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and add in almond extract.

Brush both sides of each peace of angel food cake with syrup. Then, cut the slices into 1 inch cubes.

Beat the rest of 2/3 cup sugar and the cream cheese by hand or with a mixer on medium speed until smooth.  Add the cream and beat on medium-high until smooth and whip cream like.

Arrange half of the cake cubes on the bottom of a trifle dish.  Sprinkle a layer of blueberries.  Pour half of the cream mixture over the blueberries and spread.  Top that with a layer of strawberries.  Layer the rest of the cake cubes on top of the strawberries - and then sprinkle more blueberries and top with the rest of the cream mixture.
Decorate the top by making a pattern using the rest of the strawberries and blueberries.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

We hope you have a great day of grilling out, family time and, of course, fireworks!  Remember to be smart and safe.  :)From the ReduceMyInsurance.Net family to yours ... Happy Fourth of July!
